Let us tell you about the time Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on the Golden Boot after scoring 46 league goals

If there’s two things Cristiano Ronaldo loves it’s scoring goals and winning individual awards.

Ronny has bagged five prized Ballon d’Or awards over his career and scored hundreds of goals.

But he will still rue missing out on the Spanish Golden Boot, also known as the Pichichi trophy, in the 2011-12 season.

It’s understandable, seeing as Ronaldo scored an incredible 46 goals in 38 league games.

That was as part of a Real Madrid side that smashed through records including most goals scored in a single season (121) and the most points for a season, bettering Barcelona’s 99 points two seasons before by a single point.

Any idea who that free-flowing, high-scoring and entertaining side was managed by?

None other than Mr. Entertainment himself Jose Mourinho.

Ronaldo went through that season putting the ball in the back of the net at almost any moment he fancied.

He scored 38% of Real’s historic goal tally with a goals-to-game ratio of 1.314 and yet it still wasn’t enough to win the Golden Boot.

All because of a pesky so and so named Lionel Messi who you might have heard of.

That season Messi was on a different planet as he hit 50 goals in one less game than his arch rival.

Messi’s goals ratio of 1.351 was the highest since Mariano Martin bagged 32 in 23 way back in 1943.

A small signifier of just how incredible it was to score 50 league goals in a season is that Messi won the Pichichi in the season just gone with a paltry 34 goals.

Ronaldo bided his time and took his revenge three years later.

Messi must have thought he had his fourth Pichichi all wrapped up when he scored his 43rd goal of the season – a tally only bettered by Messi himself in the previous 85 years.

He hadn’t accounted for the rage within CR7 for missing out on the gong in 2012.

CR7 became a superhuman in the 2014-15 season as he dragged Real Madrid to the Champions League final but couldn’t prevent Barca winning the title.

In the first 20 league games of the season Ronaldo found the back of the net an outrageous 31 times – enough to win the Premier League Golden Boot 10 times in the last 11 years.

He added another 17 in the second half and beat Messi to the Pichichi trophy by a whopping five goals.

Maybe La Liga is too easy?
