TFC notebook: Tough stretch ahead for MLS Cup champs

Toronto FC was back in training on Tuesday ahead of its road game against Atlanta United this weekend.

Here are some news and notes from the day’s practice.

TOUGH STRETCH AHEAD FOR TFC

TFC improved to 6-11-4 on the season with Saturday’s important 3-0 home win over the Chicago Fire. It was the Reds’ fourth consecutive victory in all competitions, and it marked the first time this year that they recorded back-to-back wins in MLS.

The MLS Cup champs are 10th in the Eastern Conference, four places and six points behind the New England Revolution, who hold down the last playoff spot in the East. The next two weeks pose a daunting task for a Toronto side that is desperately trying to claw its way back into playoff contention.

Following Saturday’s road contest in Atlanta (which sits first place in MLS), TFC travels to Vancouver where it will face the Whitecaps next Wednesday in the first leg of the Canadian Championship final. Then the Reds return home to host New York City FC (second place in MLS) on Aug. 12. Three days later, they’ll take on the Whitecaps at BMO Field in the return leg of the Canadian Championship final.

It’s a difficult stretch, and TFC’s post-season hopes could either be boosted or take a battering, depending on the results. Coach Greg Vanney is looking at the next two MLS games – against the top two sides in the league – as the glass being half full, rather than empty.

“It’s not the worst thing. Having come off a good [two-game] series against Chicago … there’s a lot of confidence back in the group going forward, so it’s as good a time as any to play teams who are at the top of table, and challenging ourselves,” Vanney told reporters after Tuesday’s practice.

Once ravaged by injuries, TFC is getting close to full health again, and having key players return to the lineup could help it through this challenging part of the schedule, and enable Vanney to rotate his squad.

“Some of the travel that’s in front of us is stuff we have to manage; it’s a bit reminiscent of the beginning of the season. The good thing is that we’re getting close to maximum depth and access to everybody, which will mean we can try to divide the load up a little bit and still accomplish what we want,” Vanney stated.

NEW PLAYERS COMING IN?

The MLS secondary transfer window, which allows teams to sign international players and make trades within the league, began on July 10 and will remain open until Aug. 8.

TFC recently acquired $50,000 in general allocation money as part of the trade that sent midfielder Nicolas Hasler to Chicago, and Vanney revealed the club is looking to add another player before the window closes. But he also stressed they are in no rush to make a move, especially with so many of their players returning from injury.

“We’re active, we’re in conversations with potential players to come in. … We’re trying to be specific about who we get and what type of payer we get. If we get one of these deals across the line, then we’ll have somebody who we can bring in,” Vanney explained.

“It’s not vital, but it’s something we’re trying to accomplish for the right piece.”

INJURY UPDATES

Auro Jr. has returned to full training and is expected to be available for selection for Saturday’s game, Vanney confirmed. The Brazilian fullback has sat out the last six matches with a hamstring issue.

Canadian forward Tosaint Ricketts is day-to-day, as he is dealing with a minor groin strain that he picked up at the end of last week.

Veteran central defender Drew Moor has been sidelined since April with a quad tear. Most recently he suffered a calf injury that set back his return date. He continues to work out on his own, but he told Sportsnet he should be back in full training next week, and might be available to play at home against New York City on Aug. 12.

SEBA AT ALL-STAR GAME

The league’s best players team up to take on Serie A champions Juventus in Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game in Atlanta. TFC forward Sebastian Giovinco was named to the MLS all-star team, and will see action against his former club.

Vanney doesn’t expect his star forward to start against the Italian outfit.

“I can’t imagine he’ll be overused during the course of the game. The whole [all-star] team is made up of forwards and attacking players, so unless they play him at centre back, I don’t know how much time he’s really going to get,” Vanney joked.

TFC midfielder Liam Fraser is also in Atlanta – the MLS homegrown players team takes on the under-20 side of Mexican club Tigres on Tuesday night.

LOOKING AHEAD TO ATLANTA

Atlanta tops the overall MLS standings with a 14-4-5 record, and has a 24-point lead over TFC as it occupies the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Boasting the best offence (48 goals scored) and the fourth-best defence (26 against) in the league, Atlanta is also tough to beat at home, winning seven of its 12 matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with only two losses.

Atlanta is unbeaten in its last four games with three victories, including a 2-1 road win over the Montreal Impact this past weekend.

One player the Reds will have to be aware of his Josef Martinez. The Venezuelan is on a torrid scoring pace, with a league-leading 24 goals in 23 games this term, and he is only three behind Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips for the single-season record.

“We’re trending in the right direction, [we] had our best half of the season in MLS in the second half in the last game. Our rhythm came back; some of the swagger [returned], and the ball was moving quicker, and guys were playing simple,” Vanney said.

“It’s motivation for our group because they know Atlanta is the team up top and rolling, and playing there is always a challenge. But it’s good for us to have to go there and concentrate and play a full game.”

Saturday’s match is the first of two meetings between the two clubs. TFC hosts Atlanta on the final day of the season on Oct. 28.

Toronto and Atlanta battled to a pair of 2-2 draws during the 2017 MLS campaign.

MOOR TIPS HIS CAP TO BEAT REPORTER

Soccer reporter Kurt Larson has left the Toronto Sun for a job with the new Canadian Premier League that will launch next year.

One of the leading TFC reporters during his time at the Sun, Larson started writing about TFC in the newspaper in 2011 and won praise from many of his media colleagues for his extensive and thoughtful coverage of the team.

Many TFC players also respected his work.

“I always had very good interactions with Kurt. He’s one of those guys who says what’s on his mind, and there’s something refreshing about that. It wasn’t always something I agreed with, but that’s OK. We had plenty of very healthy debates,” Moor said.

I spoke one-on-one with Drew Moor after today’s practice about his injury problems, his return, and the team’s woes this season. I’ll have a full story on Sportsnet.ca on Wednesday.

Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t play in MLS All-Star Game

Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t play in MLS All-Star Game

ATLANTA — The MLS All-Star Game will feature one of the world’s most storied clubs.

Unfortunately for the more than 70,000 fans expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo is not along for the ride.

After Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup and his transfer from Real Madrid, the five-time FIFA Player of the Year took time off rather than accompany Juventus on its American preseason tour, which includes Wednesday night’s game against top players from Major League Soccer.

The decision will surely be a disappointment to the big crowd that had hoped Ronaldo would make his unofficial debut with Italy’s reigning Serie A champions while touring the United States.

Juventus acquired the 33-year-old from Real Madrid on July 10 in a deal the Serie A champion said was worth 112 million euros ($131.5 million) — the largest for a player older than 30.

Also sitting out the U.S. tour, which includes three other exhibitions, is Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain. He is coming off a scoreless World Cup in which he didn’t statty in the round of 16 loss to eventual champion France.

"Obviously these guys are world-class players," said Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan, a goalkeeper for the MLS team. "With or without them, it will be a difficult game. But their names alone bring a lot of attention. It’s a shame for everybody on the outside. For me, personally, hopefully it makes for an easier night."

Most players take three weeks off after the World Cup. Juventus opens its Serie A schedule at Chievo Verona from Aug. 18-20.

"We are sorry not to have the Ronaldo, and Higuain as well," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said through a transator. "Unfortunately, they played in the World Cup. They needed some days to rest."

Ronaldo and Higuain won’t be the only big names missing from the game.

One of MLS’ top new stars, LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, announced Monday that he’s skipping the All-Star match rather than make a cross-country trip to Atlanta. The 36-year-old Swede cited the grind of playing three matches in an eight-day span, including Sunday night’s 4-3 victory over Orlando City in which he scored his first MLS hat trick.

Ibrahimovic ranks second in MLS with 15 goals. He played with Juventus from 2004-06.

"I am disappointed to miss the 2018 All-Star game against Juventus, one of my former clubs," Ibrahimovic said in a statement. "I want to thank the fans for voting me to the team. My main focus is to score goals and help the LA Galaxy to the playoffs."

The Galaxy (10-7-5) are unbeaten in nine games and have climbed to third place in the Western Conference.

Per MLS rules, Ibrahimovic will also have to sit out LA’s next match Saturday against Colorado, one of the league’s worst teams.

New York City forward David Villa also will skip the All-Star Game after missing six matches with a knee injury. Ibrahimovic and Villa were replaced on the MLS roster by Minnesota forward Darwin Quintero and New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams.

Atlanta United coach Gerardo Martino, who will be guiding the MLS team, said the timing of the game does pose problems.

"In reality, I recognize it’s a little bit of a challenge for coaches who have players participating," Martino said through an interpreter. "Some players are coming from teams where they’ve played three games (in the last week). Some had a long trip to get here, like from Vancouver. I understand it’s a very beautiful spectacle for the league and the United States. But I think what we have to look at in the future is to have it at a different time, either before or after the season.

"We have to make sure the players arriving here in good condition are also returning to their teams in good condition."

But MLS is eager to show off its most compelling success story.

Atlanta shattered the MLS attendance record in its debut season, averaging 48,200 per game, and is on pace to break that mark this year at nearly 52,000 per game. The club already has the five biggest stand-alone crowds in MLS history — each more than 70,000 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The league expects another record crowd for its All-Star Game, breaking the mark of 70,728 in Houston for the 2010 match in which Manchester United defeated the MLS squad 5-2. An extra 1,500 tickets have been put on sale to meet the demand.

"It’s been fantastic to see the support that the city has given the club," Guzan said. "There’s not many cities around the world that have what we have here in Atlanta. I’m happy to have the opportunity to showcase this to everyone."

Whitecaps need to put Alphonso Davies transfer funds to use

Sportsnet.ca
Whitecaps need to put Alphonso Davies transfer funds to use
Whitecaps need to put Alphonso Davies transfer funds to use

VANCOUVER – The Major League Soccer record-breaking transfer of Canadian sensation Alphonso Davies to Bayern Munich from the Vancouver Whitecaps looks great for nearly everyone.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder goes to one of the top clubs in the world and will be rich, although not as wealthy as Whitecaps majority owner Greg Kerfoot, who reportedly pockets about $20 million from the German club plus 15 per cent of whatever future fee Bayern may collect on another Davies transfer.

The move to Europe provides Davies the platform to increase the profile of both Canadian soccer and MLS. The Whitecaps, who lifted Davies from Edmonton when the Ghanaian-born player was 14, finally have a glittering example of their development program and someone whose rise becomes a permanent part of the franchise’s legacy.

It looks like a win for everyone. Except for fervent Whitecaps fans whose loyalty – and ticket money – has been repaid with one playoff victory since the team joined MLS in 2011.

Although it’s believed Davies will finish this season in North America, partly because he’s ineligible to play for a club outside Canada until his 18th birthday in November, Vancouver is losing its best and most exciting player at a time when the Whitecaps are going backwards.

Everybody knew this was coming for Davies. He made his Whitecaps debut at 15, scored three goals for Canada and won the Golden Boot at the CONCACAF Gold Cup at age 16, and this season has been not only the best player in Vancouver but one of the best in MLS.

With power and speed to back up his immense skill and cultured left foot, Davies has always looked destined for something greater than MLS. Truly, he looks capable of becoming the best player in Canadian soccer history. So, nobody expected him to spend his career or even some of his prime years on artificial turf in Vancouver.

All soccer fans in Canada should be happy for Davies – who, unlike former Bayern recruit Owen Hargreaves did not shun his own national team or Canadian accent – even as they prepare to mourn his loss to a far bigger stage.

But the only way this deal works for fans on the West Coast is if ownership reinvests its $20 million on the Whitecaps and spends the money necessary to acquire a marquee scorer and elite playmaker. Just spending a little money to keep the good players they have would help, too.

As the Whitecaps, minus Davies, stagger into the second leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal Wednesday against the Montreal Impact at B.C. Place Stadium, Vancouver has won just three of 12 MLS games since April and fallen four points adrift of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Bleeding goals and easy to play against, the Whitecaps are almost unrecognizable from the team that finished third in the regular season a year ago.

Most of the positional downgrades that have occurred on the field can be traced to thriftiness.

The Whitecaps didn’t like popular goalie David Ousted’s salary expectations and began phasing him out before the end of last season. They balked at the pay demands of stout central defender Tim Parker, a rising MLS star who Vancouver had drafted and developed, and traded the 25-year-old to New York. The Whitecaps declined the contract option on Matias Laba and the dependable holding midfielder decided to return home to Argentina. Leading scorer Fredy Montero left after last season when the Whitecaps’ loan deal with his Chinese club expired. And the team still hasn’t replaced playmaking midfielder Pedro Morales, who left two years ago.

The spine of the Whitecaps, the middle of their lineup, has become weak and vulnerable. The transfer money from the sale of Davies could fix a lot of problems.

[radioclip id=4147507]

“I’ll continue to work with the players that I’ve got,” coach Carl Robinson said Tuesday after the Whitecaps practised without Davies, who was on his way to sign his Bayern contract. “That’s probably a question for above me. Part of my job was to help coach, with my staff, and develop the boy and then let him go if that’s the case.

“If we’ve got a 17-year-old that we think is a wonderful talent that one of the top teams in the world wants, why should we stand in his way? That’s not fair. Did we want to sell him? No, I want him to play with me because he’s a big success on the field. But you can’t be selfish at this moment.”

No one is arguing with that. But if the money earned by developing and selling players isn’t re-invested, then what exactly are you selling to your own fans?

“We do lose our best player of the season; there’s no secret,” midfielder Russell Teibert, the longest-serving Whitecap, said after training. “He’s been electric. Fans enjoy watching him, we enjoy watching him. It’s very hard to replace a player like that. But one player isn’t going to win us a Canadian championship and one player isn’t going to get us into the (MLS) playoffs.

“I think we’re really going to see the guys who really want to play for this club, and play for this crest and play for the Vancouver Whitecaps … the guys who really want to sweat and bleed for this team. The club needs that.”

The Whitecaps haven’t had enough of those guys this season, and Davies was the best of them.

Fantasy football: What could Alisson bring to the Premier League this season?

Dream Team FC
Fantasy football: What could Alisson bring to the Premier League this season?

Alisson is at the centre of a transfer tug of war between Liverpool and Chelsea with the deal big news for both sets of supporters and fantasy football fans.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, and is rumoured to be departing Roma in a deal that could be worth around £62million.

The 25-year-old started all five of his country’s games at the World Cup and was Tite’s first choice over Man City’s Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson.

Alisson’s stock rose drastically following his impressive campaign with Roma last season.

The Brazilian shot-stopper played a crucial role in his side’s coupon-busting run to the Champions League semi-finals, before they were beaten by Liverpool at the penultimate step.

After making 31 appearances for Brazil, as well as having experience of Europe’s elite competition, it’s no surprise to see that Alisson is on the radar of so many top clubs.

Liverpool fans are so excited by the potential new arrival that they have even began to track private jets that could belong to the Roma man.

He’s more than your average goalkeeper.

Alisson could prove a huge fantasy football hit

The Brazilian is widely praised for not only his shot-stopping abilities and command of his area, but also for another trait.

Alisson is known to be very capable with the ball at his feet, with his impressive distribution perhaps the standout ability of the in-demand stopper.

If Liverpool or Chelsea were to agree any deal, they would be buying themselves a player in a similar mould to his countryman Ederson.

Getty - Contributor The Brazilian is far from your conventional goalkeeper[/caption]

What could Alisson bring to your fantasy football team?

According to Dream Team’s ratings provider WhoScored, Alisson had an impressive season in Serie A with Roma at 7.00.

The Brazilian was the highest-rated keeper in the league and made it into the Serie A team of the season.

Liverpool’s current goalkeeping options fail to compete with Alisson’s form at Roma. Both Loris Karius (6.70) and Simon Mignolet (6.49) had a lower average on WhoScored last season.

The Roma man also ranks higher than both of Chelsea’s goalkeepers, with Thibaut Courtois (6.63) and Willy Caballero (6.65) scoring lower than the rumoured new arrival.

Alisson moved to Roma from Brazilian side Internacional in 2016 for just £6million.

The 25-year-old was originally forced to act as the understudy to Wojciech Szczesny after the Polish international was on loan from Arsenal.

The following year, after Szczesny signed permanently for Juventus, Alisson was given the No1 jersey and the rest is history.

So, what will he cost on Dream Team?

As any transfer to the Premier League is yet to be officially confirmed, Alisson is still without a price for this season’s fantasy football game.

If Alisson does make the move to English football, we estimate him to cost Dream Team managers around £4m, judging on the prices of Ederson and David De Gea last season.

Fortnite Mobile: 5 Top tips on how to win more battles on your smartphone

Dream Team FC
Fortnite Mobile: 5 Top tips on how to win more battles on your smartphone

With thousands of downloads and consistent updates, mobile gamers are loving Fortnite.

Wouldn’t you love it more though if you could get more kills, win more battles, get the best loot and secure the Victory royale?

We have compiled five of the best tips and tricks to achieve just that.

Season 5 of Fortnite has just kicked off!

Learn the controls

The very first step is to learn the controls.

Read the help guide then hop into a game and land somewhere remote to practice running, switching weapons and building.

It is also important to adjust the sensitivity settings to suit your play style.

The controls are simple but can take some getting used to

Build, build, build

Building is an essential part of the game, especially when playing on your smartphone.

If you can learn how to build quickly and efficiently then you will be crushing your opponents left, right and centre.

the only way you will get better is to practice, practice, practice.

Once you have mastered the basic controls drop in at Wailing Woods collect some wood and practice going up and down, switching between cover and weapons.

This will make you a force to reckon with on the battlefield.

Learning to build instantly makes you a better player

Keep your friends close and enemies closer

Close range fights are ideal for mobile Fortnite players.

The controls can make picking off players with a sniper or scoped weapon rather tricky.

Try picking up the silenced SMG and a tactical shotgun and sneaking up on unsuspecting players.

This is a dead set way to give you the advantage, especially when they don’t hear you coming.

We don’t recommend using the bush…

Wear Headphones

Whether you survive until the final five or not often depends so much on how well you can hear your opponents.

Putting on headphones gives you an instant advantage, allowing you to not only see visual cues on enemy locations but also sound cues.

Fortnite mobile gives players visual cues on enemy locations

Give your fingers a rest

Having to run a long distance to get away from the storm is the norm in Fortnite.

Save some time and energy by utilising auto-run when you are far out.

“The World Cup Golden Boot. World. Cup. Golden. Boot. Does it get any bigger than that? Of course not.

“Has an Arsenal player ever won one? Nope. Harry’s done us all proud. He’s undoubtedly the best English goalscorer since Jermain Defoe.

“Everyone’s welcome, unless they’re from Madrid in which case they will be placed in handcuffs and returned to Spain immediately.
