Ibrahimovic scores twice in Galaxy win over Whitecaps

CARSON, Calif. – Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in each half in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

The Swedish star opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the fourth minute, finishing into the lower left corner. Romain Alessandrini drew the foul against Marcel de Jong.

The Galaxy (12-11-8) made it 2-0 in the 58th minute when Ibrahimovic drove in from 40 yards out, faked out defender Aly Ghazal and sent home a right-footed blast from the top of the box. It was Ibrahimovic’s 20th goal of the season.

Alessandrini converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute to cap the scoring for LA.

The Whitecaps (11-12-7) dropped their third in a row.

Who would win the Ryder Cup of football between Europe and (south) America?

Dream Team FC
Who would win the Ryder Cup of football between Europe and (south) America?

Golf’s a mad sport isn’t it?

Take this stick and twat this little ball into a small hole half a kilometre away in four tries.

Oh yeah, there’s also loads of sand and water along the way.

That’s pretty much itAP:Associated Press

Footballers love it, the golf.

Mostly because it’s one of the very few things they can spend lots of money on without getting into trouble.

Gareth Bale loves it more than football, he’s got a three-hole course in his back garden — not even kidding.

The Ryder Cup starts Friday morning and we’ll have it on in the office because Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds doesn’t kick off until 19:45pm.

Anyway, it got us thinking, what if there was a football equivalent?

Europe vs America… okay, let’s be honest, South America.

More like the Sneijder Cup… *tumbleweed*

From our limited understanding of the golf original, we vaguely get that some players qualify by virtue of being good and some are selected as ‘wild cards’.

These wild cards are decided by the respective captains — for us, that’s Messi and Ronaldo.

We’ve decided that anyone who made it into FIFA’s ‘The Best’ World XI qualifies for an automatic place.

It’s easier for all of us if ignore the flawed nature of FIFA’s process.

The captains shake hands before the inaugural Football Ryder Cup™EPA

At this stage, our teams look like this:

EUROPE

David De Gea Raphael Varane Sergio Ramos N’Golo Kante Luka Modric Kylian Mbappe Eden Hazard Cristiano Ronaldo (c)

(south) AMERICA

Dani Alves Lionel Messi (c)

Captain Ronaldo needs both full-backs and another midfielder.

And would you believe it? He’s snaked former team-mates Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos in favour of Joshua Kimmich and Kevin De Bruyne (injuries don’t exist in this hypothetical scenario).

Jordi Alba gets the nod at left-back which leaves Team Europe looking like this:

The midfield of dreams

Plenty of tough decisions for Messi to navigate.

Long-time friend and compatriot Sergio Aguero or current team-mate and partner in crime Luis Suarez?

The (south) American skipper chooses to reunite MSN! The Europe defenders will be worried about that.

James Rodriguez just edges out Philippe Coutinho in the creative midfield role.

The imperious Diego Godin is flanked by a plethora of Brazilians at the back…

Argentina with just the one representative…

So, who would win?

We’ll leave that up to you.

We’re massively bias in favour of our European brethren (Brexit mishap aside) but MSN could blow any team apart on their day.

Let us know how you see it on Facebook.

Or just keep it yourself and go about your business, whatever really.

League Cup: Mourinho’s Man United ousted by Lampard’s Derby

League Cup: Mourinho’s Man United ousted by Lampard’s Derby

LONDON — The coaching apprentice got the better of his former master as Frank Lampard’s Derby knocked Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United out of the League Cup.

In a shootout after the game ended 2-2, the teams scored 15 consecutive penalties before United defender Phil Jones’ effort was saved at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The 8-7 shootout loss to a second-tier team is another setback for Mourinho, with United already eight points behind leader Liverpool after six games in the Premier League. The humbling came on the day United’s annual accounts showed the wage bill rose 12 per cent to 295.9 million pounds ($390 million) in 2017-18 — almost 40 million pounds more than Manchester City, which won the league in May by finishing 19 points ahead of its second-placed neighbour.

City was Lampard’s last English team after spending most of his career at Chelsea, where Mourinho had two spells as manager. The former England midfielder is only in his second month as a manager after being hired by Derby.

"I’m a bit shell-shocked in a good way, what a performance from the team," Lampard told broadcaster Sky Sports. "To have the personality to take penalties and perform the way they did. I’m just a proud manager."

United had taken the lead in the third minute after Anthony Martial’s cross from the left was helped on by Jesse Lingard to Juan Mata, who swept into the net. But Harry Wilson equalized with a free kick in the 59th and United’s problems deepened when goalkeeper Romero was sent off in the 67th for handling outside the box.

Derby made the extra man count when Jack Marriott headed home from close range, a goal that was confirmed by a VAR review in the 85th. Marouane Fellaini came to United’s rescue in the fifth minute of stoppage time with an equalizer.

But the shootout failure saw United eliminated from the third round of English football’s second-tier knockout competition for the first time in 11 years.

The only other Premier League side beaten by lower-league opposition on Wednesday was Burnley which lost 2-1 to third-tier side Burton.

But holder Manchester City easily beat another third-tier side, Oxford, with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden sealing a 3-0 win.

YOUNGEST PLAYER

Harvey Elliott has become the youngest-ever player to feature for Fulham at 15 years and 174 days. The striker made his debut for the Premier League club after coming on in the 81st minute of a 3-1 victory over Millwall.

Luca de la Torre, a 20-year-old American midfielder scored his first goal for Fulham. Joe Bryan and Cyrus Christie also opened their accounts for the west London club.

BAD INJURY

Leicester winger Demarai Gray received oxygen on the field after a stoppage-time challenge on Wolverhampton defender Ryan Bennett. Gray was carried off with his left leg in a brace.

The game ended 0-0 and Leicester won the shootout 3-1 after goalkeeper Danny Ward saved kicks from Romain Saiss, Diogo Jota and Adama Traore.

ADVANCING

Crystal Palace won 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion, which was relegated from the Premier League in May. Bournemouth beat second-tier Blackburn 3-2.

Impact coach warns against complacency as team makes playoff push

Sportsnet.ca
Impact coach warns against complacency as team makes playoff push
Impact coach warns against complacency as team makes playoff push

MONTREAL — As the Montreal Impact drive toward the Major Soccer League playoffs, coach Remi Garde has sent a clear message to his players — don’t let confidence turn into complacency.

Winners of two in a row, the Montreal Impact are feeling positive heading into the final five games of the season, starting Saturday against New York City FC.

Montreal (12-14-3) is holding on to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, four points clear of seventh-place D.C. United, who have a game in hand.

"We have to be careful about all the good stuff that’s being said about us," said Garde after training on Thursday. "We know we can be a good team, but we can also be an average team if we are not focused on what we have to do.

"Right now we’re getting a lot of praise. Probably too much. Yes, the team has improved a lot this year. But in this league, praise is useless when a couple of bad results can change everything.

"We’re comfortable but we have to keep looking forward."

The Impact are coming off a pair of convincing wins. Three weeks ago, Garde’s men defeated the then league-leading New York Red Bulls 3-0. They followed that up with a rare away victory — 4-1 in Philadelphia last week.

Montreal has won three of its last four games, and has only lost once in its last six (3-1-2).

Recent signing Bacary Sagna echoed his coach’s reserved enthusiasm.

"It’s important to be humble," said the French right back. "That’s what allowed us to win in Philadelphia. Even with all the accolades after the match against the New York Red Bulls, we managed to stay concentrated and kept working hard. That was the difference.

"We know we have to keep winning if we hope to make the playoffs. Winning has given us confidence."

The Impact’s attention turns to New York City FC (14-8-7) as they descend on Saputo Stadium for the first time this season. City is third in the East with 49 points but they’ve been struggling these last two months.

They’re winless in their last five matches (0-3-2), scoring just three goals over that stretch. It’s their longest winless run in MLS since the start of the 2016 season, when they went 0-3-4.

New York City has also only won once in its last eight games.

That should be welcome news for the Impact, but forward Quincy Amarikwa doesn’t see it that way. The former San Jose Earthquakes player, who joined Montreal last month, says paying attention to the opponent is simply a distraction.

"At this point of the year, the focus has to be on us," said Amarikwa, who scored his first goal with his new club last week. "Everything else is noise. The teams who understand that at this moment are the ones who come together and do things that others may think aren’t possible.

"I don’t care what anyone else is doing. I just care if we’re setting ourselves up for success, which I think we are."

Montreal will be looking to exact some revenge on a New York City squad that won 3-0 the last time these two teams met on July 11 at Yankee Stadium. The home side scored three second-half goals to stump the Impact.

"We’ve improved offensively," said Garde, looking back on that game. "We weren’t able to get close to their goal. We’re a bit more confident now and we’re riding momentum that could help us to give our best against a very good team."

——

NEW YORK CITY FC (14-8-7) AT MONTREAL IMPACT (12-14-3)

Saturday, Saputo Stadium

Familiar face: Current New York City FC coach Domenec Torrent knows Montreal’s Bacary Sagna’s well. Torrent was Sagna’s assistant coach at Manchester City from 2016 to 2018.

Success at Saputo: New York is 3-0-0 all-time on the road in Montreal.

Well rested: New York will have some fresh legs as the team is coming off a two-week hiatus. Their last game was on Sept. 8 — a 1-1 draw against D.C. United.

Clinching scenario: A victory would clinch a playoff spot for New York City FC.

Troubles on the road: NYCFC is 1-3-0 away from home in their last four games. They’ve only won four games away from Yankee Stadium this season.

Juan Mata went from Europe’s highest assist maker to Man United benchwarmer

We want the old Juan Mata back.

The Premier League 2012/13 season was a strange point in time.

Joe Hart won the Golden Glove, Man United drew 5-5 with West Brom and Wigan qualified for the Europa League. Must we continue?

One additional detail you’ve perhaps forgotten about that particular season is that Mata went on an absolute madness™.

The Chelsea man, who was entering his second season at Stamford Bridge, topped his stats from what was an impressive debut season by an outrageous amount.

Today he’s a shadow of his former self…

Back in good old 2012/13, Mata was well on his way to becoming one of Europe’s best playmakers.

The diminutive Spaniard was carrying what was at the time an underwhelming Chelsea side.

What a season. What a player pic.twitter.com/MZ2BRNmjuf

— Meech (@Hustler_Futbol) September 11, 2018

Yes, they might have forked out for Eden Hazard in the summer, but the Blues were fronted by a questionable duo of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.

Mata took it upon himself to guide Chelsea through what was a period of transition. The club had just dismissed Roberto Di Matteo in favour of Rafa Benitez.

Getty Images - Getty Father and son[/caption]

Scoring 19 goals and chipping in with 34 assists in all competitions, the former Valencia man was playing out of his skin.

11 of his goals came in the good old Barclays, with 17 assists also coming on these shores.

Mata’s performances earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Season, as well as a spot on the shortlist for Player of the Year.

AFP His boots match the kit. Hold me, Daddy[/caption]

He was unlucky to miss out on the top award, with Spurs’ Gareth Bale snapping it up instead.

The Welshman won it rather fraudulently, if you ask me.

Is it too late for a recount?

Look at that smug face. He even knows it should have been Mata

The unbelievable form of the No10 helped the Blues to lift the Europa League at the end of the campaign.

Mata was effectively the reason that Chelsea fans ended up warming to Benitez, a man who they had treated so harshly upon his arrival.

It’s a well known fact that he’s the nicest man in football.

News Group Newspapers Ltd Give this man more trophies ASAP[/caption]

It’s no coincidence that the Spaniard’s demise has come as Jose Mourinho proceeds to go off-the-boil once again.

Mata can’t seem to secure himself a regular spot in the side at United. It’s about time he moved elsewhere.

The 30-year-old is approaching a stage where he needs opportunities to play before it’s too late. Opportunities that he will seldom get at Old Trafford.

PA:Press Association I’m not sure why the guy in the background is laughing. This is serious stuff[/caption]

His international career has suffered too. Just when it had looked as though he was to be the future of the Spanish national team, he’s now not featured since 2016.

Mata’s quality is undoubted and his antics in 2012/13 are all the proof you need that there’s a top player waiting to reemerge.

Give us back the old Mata, please.

Fantasy football tips: 5 players you NEED for Game Week 5 in the Premier League

It’s time to sink your teeth into the juicy steak that is the Premier League, because Game Week 5 is fast approaching.

Spurs get to host Liverpool at Wembley, Man United face the daunting trip to in-form Watford and we get to see more of Ruben Neves when Wolves travel to Burnley on Sunday.

But before any of that, you need to give your fantasy football team some much-needed love.

It’s probably been a while since you thought about your Dream Team line-up, isn’t it?

So we’re here to help you decide which transfers to make ahead of the weekend, with our five favourite picks.

Fantasy football tips: 5 players you NEED for Game Week 5 in the Premier League 1 Kepa Arrizabalaga – £3.3m

Reuters Kepa’s flying[/caption]

Chelsea’s new goalkeeper has looked solid enough between the sticks so far this season (which is probably what you’d expect for the world’s most expensive goalie) and he’ll certainly fancy his chances against Cardiff this weekend.

After all, Neil Warnock’s side have struggled to score goals since winning promotion back to the Premier League and will likely struggle to break down the Blues defence at Stamford Bridge.

We’re predicting a nice clean-sheet bonus for Kepa.

2 Marcos Alonso – £4.9m Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso has been on fire this seasonGetty Images - Getty

Speaking of clean-sheet bonuses, how about adding one of Chelsea’s best points-scoring defenders to your ranks?

Alonso is by-far the best defender on fantasy football this season, racking up a tasty 40 points following some standout performances.

In fact, new boss Maurizo Sarri was so impressed with him after their win over Bournemouth last time out that he described him as the ‘best left-back in Europe’.

3 Lucas Moura – £3.4m

AP:Associated Press Will we get more goals from Lucas this weekend?[/caption]

It’s a bad time for Spurs to play free-scoring Liverpool, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side missing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli through injury.

What’s more, Harry Kane is seemingly a little out of form at the moment, so they’ll be looking for some extra firepower from somewhere else.

Step-up Brazilian hot-shot Lucas, who’s already been one of the stars of the season with a lovely haul of 27 points, thanks largely to those two goals against Man United. If anyone’s going to unlock Liverpool’s defence, it’ll be him.

4 Roberto Pereyra – £2.4m

Reuters Fantasy football fans certainly love Roberto at the moment[/caption]

READ MORE:

Here’s how to win Dream Team Weekender – from our latest winner  Who should replace injured duo Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli in your fantasy football team? Rachid Ghezzal is criminally under-picked despite being one of the Premier League’s inform players

Hardly anyone picked Pereyra at the start of the season, but after helping Watford win all of their games so far he’s steadily become a bit of a Dream Team favourite.

With 25 points to his name – with three goals and a Star Man bonus to boot – he’s certainly a man in-form at the moment.

Hosting Man United this weekend, we can certainly see this guy terrorising Jose Mourinho’s shaky back-line.

5 Sergio Aguero – £6.9m

PA:Press Association More goals for Aguero? Yes please[/caption]

Will this be the year he finally wins the Premier League Golden Boot?

With three goals to his name this season, he’s certainly heading in the right direction.

He’ll want to add to his tally this weekend against Fulham, especially as Cottagers boss Slavisa Jokanovic seems to be rotating his goalkeepers at the minute.

Dream Team FC
Fantasy football: Who should you pick for your Dream Team Weekender side this weekend?

We’re happy to announce that Premier League football is back this weekend, following the fun-sponge that is the international break.

And while our love for the national team has been restored – thanks largely to Gareth Southgate and the lads over the summer – we’re far too interested in fantasy football at the moment to take any kind of break.

Still, absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that.

In fact, we really do fancy a bit of Dream Team Weekender this weekend, as we’ve doubled the weekly jackpot to a tasty £10k. So, what’s it all about?

Well, Weekender is perhaps the easiest and best new way to get into fantasy football – and it’s absolutely free to play.

All you have to do is pick seven players from the Saturday and Sunday Premier League fixtures with no budget limitations. And because we’re so good to you, we thought we’d give you a helping hand getting started.

So here’s some players you might want to consider…

Marcos Alonso – 40 points this season

Luckily for us England fans, Spain’s marauding full-back didn’t quite get forward as much as he usually does for Chelsea when the two sides met at Wembley last weekend.

Because when he sticks that blue shirt on, we all know that Alonso is easily one of the more terrifying wing-backs in the Premier League.

Getty Images - Getty Alonso has been a fantasy football must have since joining Chelsea from Fiorentina[/caption]

He’s already nabbed a goal this season – the winner in the 3-2 over Arsenal, no less – while new boss Maurizo Sarri was so impressed with him after their win over Bournemouth recently that he described him as the ‘best left-back in Europe’.

With the Blues hosting struggling-to-score Cardiff this weekend, we really do fancy a goal and/or assist from this man, coupled with a nice clean-sheet bonus.

Lucas Moura – 27 points this season

AP:Associated Press The Spurs man absolutely terrorised Manchester United[/caption]

We reckon it’ll take Man United fans more than just a win over Burnley to get over the nightmare this fella put them through recently.

Brazilian hotshot Lucas terrorised Jose Mourinho’s back-line last month, netting twice at Old Trafford to make him an instant Spurs hero.

But can he do it this weekend against Liverpool?

Getty - Contributor His performances this month earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award[/caption]

Mauricio Pochettino is missing Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli for this one – while Harry Kane is seemingly a little out of form at the moment – so some extra firepower will be much-appreciated.

Callum Wilson – 25 points this season

It’s been a great season so far for Bournemouth’s Wilson.

The once injury-plagued striker has netted twice already – including a lovely five-against-one strike against West Ham – that left some of us wondering why Southgate didn’t call him up for his England squad.

Maybe he doesn’t have the lads number?

Reuters Can you see Wilson netting again this weekend?[/caption]

Up against Leicester this weekend – who kept only three clean sheets away from home last season and have just one so far this term – you might just fancy the current form-man to grab a goal or two.

Roberto Pereyra – 25 points this season

Watford have been the surprise package in the Premier League so far this season.

Following their win over Spurs last time out, the Hornets are rubbing shoulders with the big boys at the top end of the table, while fantasy football fans are desperate to sign up their attacking linchpin Pereyra.

AFP or licensors Watford’s man in form[/caption]

With three goals so far this season, the former Juventus winger has already become a Dream Team favourite.

Could be do it again when Watford host Man United on Saturday evening?
